A Window to Kerala
August,2004 by The Hindu
Kairali Kalakshetram at Kodumbu, near Palakkad town, is a window to the rich and colourful art forms. Culture and health practices that are unique to Kerala.
Many consider it to be a temple of learning as this institution has facilities to learn the art forms of the State as well as martial arts, yoga and meditation. Run by the Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resort, Kairali Kalakshetram is situated in the midst of 50 acres of lush greenery. It was the brainchild of Ramesh, who hails from a family of traditional Ayurveda practitioners at Kodumbu.
According to Mr. Ramesh, his principal objective was to provide a soothing and comfortable fusion of the traditional lifestyle with the colourful vibrancy of the arts and cultural forms that have been nurtured and developed over centuries.
Kalashethram provides theoretical and practical knowledge about Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation in addition to information about Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, chenda and Kalaripayattu.
Many foreigners enrol as students to learn Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, and to play the chenda. Kalakshethram also offers short-time courses in Kalaripayattu.
The students are introduced to Ayurveda and its historical perspective. It teaches them about different types of medicinal plants that are commonly seen and used. Students have found the lecture-cum-demonstrations and workshops organized for them very effective in helping them to understand the subject of their choice, claims K.V.Sajeev, chief executive of Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resorts.
