However, she admits that initially it was tough because people were not aware about the benefits of ayurveda. Now things have changed and people are using ayurveda as alternative method of healing; says Gita. She adds, "Earlier it was not easy to make people understand that there are no side effects of ayurveda as they were quite skeptical about using herbs to treat illnesses which allopathy) failed to cure. However, gradually people wanted to try it and later the awareness spread by just word of mouth," remembers Gita. Her interest in ayurveda can be attributed to the" fact that she bas grown up drinking herbal concoctions for common. Ailments and they have worked for her. Gita got married into the family which has been practicing ayurveda, for three generations. In Kerala, 'almost every family Practices ayurveda and believes it to be most effective method of healing" informs Ms Ramesh. Every family prepares their own mixtures to cure themselves. Though ayurveda was practiced all over the country in the ancient times, today Kerala is the only state which has followed it religiously. Gita believes thar ayurveda provides longer relief and that this is why people are ready to invest in it despite it being a costly treatment. "A body massage costs Rs 1,000 but if you compar'e[ to allopathy, people end up spending a fortune and still don’t get the desired results," .says Gita. Ayurveda provides a personalised treatment. Hence, there no fixed cures even for the common ailment which is why consultation plays an important role. Consultation can last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the severity of the problem because there are a lot of discussions involved," informs Gita. ayurveda works on the philosophy that the treatment not only treats the disease but also strengthens the immune system.
